Today I was very fortunate to be invited to attend Toronto Public Library's training day on the 'Ready for Reading' program. Approximate;y 100 people attended it was a great day.
The image above is by Barbara Reid, a Canadian childdren's illustrator who works with the medium of plasticine. Barbara was one of the plenary speakers at todays training session and she was wonderful.
Other sessions invovled how to use drama, music, instruments, storytelling and puppets to build the pre-reading skills of talk, read, sing, play and write. These skills are the foundational skills of the 'Ready for Reading' program that Canadian and US libraries use in their early childhood programs.
Many of these different approaches to literacy development can also be used to make literacy activities more accessible to a very diverse range of children.
